The total mass of these clouds is enormous; there is enough material to make 700,000 stars the size of the Sun. Most of the material is hydrogen, either molecular (two neutral atoms bound together) or neutral (a single atom with its outer electron). Even so, over 30 kinds of molecules, including carbon monoxide, have been detected.
